By plane
There are several ground transportation options to the Costa Chica. Several bus companies make the trip from Mexico City to Huatulco, Puerto Escondido and Pochutla. The best option to book a bus ticket is www.ticketbus.com.mx, where you can also pay the fare online. You can also consult the website of ADO (www.ado.com.mx) which has bus service from Oaxaca City to the Costa Chica.
An alternative from Oaxaca City are minivans that make the trip to Pochutla. This alternative is cheaper and faster than buses, but also less comfortable. The two companies that offer this service are Eclipse 70 (958-584-0840 in Pochutla and 951-516-1068 in Oaxaca City) and Atlantis (958-584-0116 in Pochutla and 951-514-7077 in Oaxaca City).
Car rental
Another alternative is to rent a car. There are several rental car companies, both at airports (HUX and PXM) and in Oaxaca City or Mexico City. Some of these companies are:
- Europcar (www.europcar.com)
- Only Rent a Car (www.onlyrentacar.com)
- Hertz (www.hertz.com.mx)
The travel time from the Mexico City is approximately 12 hours. You can do this trip either via Oaxaca City and then cross the Sierra Madre on the highway MEX 175 or via Acapulco and then follow the Pacific coast on highway MEX 200 to the Costa Chica Oaxaca.
From Oaxaca City the trip by car takes around 5-6 hours; it is only 250km, but the street is very windy and it is, especially through the Sierra Madre, almost impossible to pass other cars for long stretches. However, the upside to driving is that you get to experience the beautiful and ever-changing landscape as you pass through the different climate zones of the Sierra Madre.
Unless you arrive by car rental, you will need to take a taxi to Manta Raya. We will gladly assist you with finding a taxi from Huatulco or Pochutla.
